December 12: Nupi Lan Day (India)

Nupi Lan Day is observed in Manipur, India, every December 12 to commemorate a significant women’s movement against British colonial authorities in the early 20th century. The day honors the protests initiated by Manipuri women in 1904 against the reintroduction of the forced labor system known as Lallup-Kaba, which burdened them with additional work in the absence of men. The movement, referred to as Nupi Lan or “women’s war,” saw around 5,000 women gather at Khwairamband Bazar to demand justice, leading to the eventual rescindment of the order. A second Nupi Lan occurred in December 1939 due to rising rice exports that threatened the food security of ordinary people, further showcasing the role of women in the state's agrarian economy. The anniversary is marked by remembrance ceremonies organized by the government and various NGOs throughout Manipur, honoring the courage of women who protested against injustice and contributed to the struggle for social and political reforms.
