December 14: Forty-seven Ronin Remembrance Day (Japan)

Every December 14, Japan observes Forty-seven Ronin Remembrance Day at Sengaku-ji temple in Tokyo, where the graves of the forty-seven ronin and their master, Asano Naganori, lie. This day pays tribute to the ronin—samurai without a leader—who avenged their master’s death by killing Kira Yoshinaka, the man who had insulted Asano. After Asano was ordered to commit seppuku for attacking Kira, his retainers became ronin and pledged to seek revenge. They spent two years carefully planning their attack, even disguising themselves to get inside Kira’s home. On the decisive day, they killed Kira and brought his head to Asano’s tomb. Although the shogun sentenced them to death, they were granted the honor of dying by seppuku. The festival at Sengaku-ji features various ceremonies commemorating their story.
