National Wreaths Across America Day is observed every second or third Saturday of December at Arlington National Cemetery and over 3,000 cemeteries and memorials worldwide. This day honors fallen United States veterans and those currently serving in the armed forces through wreath-laying ceremonies. The tradition began in 1992 when Worcester Wreaths, a family-owned company from Maine, donated surplus Christmas wreaths to decorate graves. The event gained momentum after a viral photograph in 2005 inspired thousands to participate in wreath-laying at local cemeteries. In 2007, the non-profit organization Wreaths Across America was established to facilitate this effort, and by 2008, the U.S. Senate recognized the observance. Today, volunteers place over a million wreaths annually, including at significant sites like the USS Arizona Memorial and the 9/11 Memorial. Participants can sponsor wreaths, volunteer, or donate to local groups to support the cause.
