December 21: Forefathers’ Day (United States)

Forefathers’ Day is observed in Plymouth, Massachusetts, every December 22. This holiday commemorates the landing of the Pilgrim Fathers and the establishment of the Plymouth Colony on December 21, 1620. The celebration dates back to 1769, although the date is recognized as December 22 due to a historical error in calendar adjustment. The Old Colony Club, one of the oldest gentlemen’s clubs in the United States, organizes the festivities, which begin with a march to Cole’s Hill, where a proclamation is read and a cannon is fired. A traditional dinner featuring succotash, a dish believed to have been served at the first Thanksgiving, is also part of the celebration. The General Society of Mayflower Descendants, known as the Mayflower Society, hosts a similar dinner on a different day to allow members of both organizations to participate in each other's events.
