Martyr's Day is observed in Panama every January 9, commemorating those who died during the riots in 1964 between Panamanian students and Canal Zone Police officers. The day marks the protests that erupted in response to the prohibition of flying American and Canal Zone flags outside schools and public places. Tensions escalated when students from Balboa High School attempted to raise the Panamanian flag, leading to violent confrontations with police, resulting in the deaths of 28 individuals, including students and children. To honor the memory of the victims, two monuments have been erected: one at the flagpole where the incident occurred and another in front of the Legislative Assembly. The day serves as a significant memorial for the historical conflict and the ongoing relationship between Panama and the Canal Zone.
