Voodoo Day is celebrated in Benin every January 10, also known as Traditional Day or Fête du Vodoun. This holiday is significant as about 60% of Benin's population practices voodoo, making it a major festival in the country. The most notable celebrations occur in Ouidah, a city recognized as the birthplace of voodoo and a former slaves' port. The festivities begin with the sacrifice of a goat, believed to protect practitioners and the population from diseases. Following the sacrifice, traditional drum music, dances, singing, and drinking, particularly gin, take place. The celebration culminates at the official residence of the voodoo chief, who provides free drinks and food to the attendees.
