German Apples Day, observed in Germany every January 11, is a campaign aimed at promoting the consumption of apples and supporting local apple cultivars. Initiated in 2010 by the Federal Association of Fruit and Vegetables Producers, the day encourages people to appreciate German apple varieties, such as Alkmene and Gloster, in contrast to popular non-German cultivars like Elstar and Gala. Celebrations include the distribution of hundreds of thousands of apples in major cities, with free apples given to kindergarteners, school students, and passers-by. Notably, in 2020, FlixBus participated by handing out approximately 20,000 apples to travelers at central bus stations in Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich. The campaign is part of a broader initiative titled “Germany – My Garden,” which aims to foster support for local producers.
