Established by Viacheslav Chornovil, a prominent dissident in the Soviet Union, the day commemorates the mass arrests of Ukrainian dissidents that began on this date in 1972, known as “Operation Block.” Chornovil, who was one of the founders of the Sixtiers movement advocating for Ukraine's revival, was arrested multiple times for his activism. The observance initially took place among political prisoners in their detention facilities but has since evolved into a broader recognition of those who resisted political repression under the Soviet regime. The day has gained significance following the Russo-Ukrainian War, particularly in light of arrests of pro-Ukrainian activists like filmmaker Oleg Sentsov.
