The Feast of the Divina Pastora is observed in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, every January 14. This celebration honors the Divina Pastora, the patron saint of the city, and attracts millions of pilgrims who participate in a festive procession. The tradition dates back to 1736 when a statue of the Virgin Mary, depicted as a shepherdess, was mistakenly commissioned instead of the Immaculate Conception. The statue, adorned in new attire created by local designers, is carried from the Church of the Divina Pastora in Santa Rosa through the streets of Barquisimeto to the Barquisimeto Cathedral, covering a distance of about 7.5 km over nearly seven hours. The event concludes with a Mass and various cultural activities. The Divina Pastora is also recognized as the patron saint of the National Bolivarian Militia of Venezuela, and her veneration has been strengthened by historical events, including her statue surviving an earthquake and the cessation of a cholera outbreak attributed to her intercession.
