January 21: Postgraduate Student Day (Russia)

Postgraduate Student Day is observed in Russia and some former Soviet republics every January 21. This day commemorates the foundation of postgraduate education in the Soviet Union, established in 1925 when the Council of People’s Commissars approved key resolutions. Although it lacks official status, the holiday is gaining popularity among Russian postgraduate students and is marked by various events such as concerts, award ceremonies, conferences, and seminars organized by universities and research institutions. The holiday celebrates the contributions of postgraduate students, who pursue a Candidate of Sciences degree, equivalent to a PhD in many countries. It has been celebrated annually since 2008 and is also recognized in some Ukrainian and Belarusian universities, albeit with less prominence. The date is notably close to Russian Students’ Day, occurring just four days earlier.
