January 21: Lincoln Alexander Day (Canada)

Lincoln Alexander Day is observed in Canada, particularly in the province of Ontario, every January 21. This annual observance honors Lincoln Alexander, a prominent Canadian lawyer and politician who made history as the first black Member of Parliament and the first black federal Minister of the Crown in Canada. Born in Toronto in 1922, Alexander served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II before pursuing a career in law and politics. He was elected as a Progressive Conservative MP in 1968 and held his seat through four elections until 1980. Additionally, he served as Minister of Labor and later as the 24th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. The Province of Ontario officially proclaimed January 21 as Lincoln Alexander Day in 2013, and it was celebrated across Canada for the first time in 2015, recognizing his significant contributions and achievements.
