January 23: Bounty Day (Pitcairn Islands)

Bounty Day is observed in the Pitcairn Islands on January 23 each year, commemorating the anniversary of the mutiny on HMS Bounty in 1790. The mutiny occurred while the ship was on a mission to acquire breadfruit for the West Indies, but it was never completed due to the uprising that took place on April 28, 1789. After the mutineers took control of the ship, they initially attempted to settle on Tubai but faced violent conflicts with the natives, leading them to return to Tahiti. Eventually, on January 15, 1790, they rediscovered Pitcairn Island, which had been mischarted, and decided to settle there. To avoid detection by the Royal Navy, the mutineers burned HMS Bounty on January 23. Today, the Pitcairn Islands are a British Overseas Territory, and most of the islanders are descendants of the Bounty mutineers and Tahitians.
