January 23: Freedom Day (Taiwan)

World Freedom Day is observed in Taiwan every January 23, commemorating the return of Taiwanese prisoners of war after the Korean War. On this day in 1954, over 14,000 Communist Chinese prisoners arrived at the Port of Keelung, having chosen to seek freedom in Taiwan rather than return to mainland China. The celebration is coordinated by the World League for Freedom and Democracy (WLFD), which evolved from the Asian People's Anti-Communist League founded by Taiwan, the Philippines, and South Korea in 1954. The Taiwanese chapter established World Freedom Day to honor the anniversary of this significant event and to celebrate the values of democracy and freedom. The main event takes place in Taipei and is attended by WLFD delegates from around the world, featuring a congratulatory message from the president of the Republic of China and various cultural performances.
