The National Day of Reconciliation and Peace is observed in Nicaragua every February 2. This public holiday commemorates Miguel Obando y Bravo, a significant figure in Nicaraguan history, who served as Archbishop of Managua from 1970 to 2005. Obando was known for his outspoken views on political issues, particularly during the Somoza regime and the Sandinista revolution. His efforts in promoting peace and reconciliation following the civil war of the 1980s led to his recognition as a national hero of peace in 2016. The holiday was established in 2026 as part of an expansion of Nicaragua's holiday calendar to honor important figures and events. It is one of four new holidays, alongside those honoring poet Rubén DarÃo, revolutionary Augusto César Sandino, and revolutionary Carlos Fonseca Amador.
