February 2: Feast of the Virgin of Candelaria (Spain)

The Feast of the Virgin of Candelaria is celebrated in the Canary Islands, particularly in Tenerife, on February 2 and August 15 each year. This event honors the Virgin of Candelaria, the patron saint of the archipelago, depicted as a Black Madonna holding a candle and the Child Jesus. The origins of the feast trace back to a statue discovered by Guanche shepherds in the late 14th century, initially revered as the goddess Chaxiraxi. After the Spanish conquest, the statue was recognized as the Virgin Mary, leading to the first feast in 1497, coinciding with Candlemas. Celebrations include a solemn Mass at the Basilica of Candelaria, a torchlight procession, a reenactment of the statue's discovery, fireworks, and various festive activities. The Virgin of Candelaria is also venerated in regions across South America, the Caribbean, and the Philippines, where she holds patronage in several cities.
