The ukulele has roots in small stringed instruments from Portugal and the Canary Islands, introduced to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants in the late 19th century. The holiday promotes the appreciation of the ukulele as a legitimate musical instrument, countering the perception of it as merely a "toy guitar." Activities associated with the day include learning about the ukulele and famous players, watching ukulele videos, attending concerts, and participating in jam sessions. Participants are encouraged to share their enthusiasm for the instrument on social media using specific hashtags. The holiday was inspired by musician Mike Lynch, who also established a similar observance on May 2, known as National Play Your Ukulele Day.
