Korean People's Army Foundation Day is observed in North Korea every April 25. This day commemorates the founding of the Korean People’s Revolutionary Army in 1932 by Kim Il Sung, which later transformed into the Korean People’s Army (KPA) on February 8, 1948. The KPA serves as the military force of North Korea and is the armed wing of the Workers’ Party of Korea. The KPA consists of five branches: the Ground Force, Navy, Air Force, Strategic Force, and Special Operations Forces, along with the DPRK Missile Administration overseeing missile development. The Foundation Day is celebrated twice a year, but from 1978 to 2014, only the April anniversary was recognized. The day highlights the importance of military service in North Korean society, where there is universal conscription for men and selective conscription for women.
