National Press Day (Hari Pers Nasional) is observed in Indonesia every February 9 to commemorate the founding anniversary of the Indonesian Journalists Association (Persatuan Wartawan Indonesia, PWI), which was established in Surakarta in 1946. This day celebrates Indonesian journalists and media professionals, promoting high standards in journalism. The PWI was formed during the Indonesian National Revolution to combat Dutch colonialism through media. The National Press Monument (Monumen Pers Nasional), located in Surakarta, serves as a significant site, housing an extensive collection of over a million newspapers and magazines, along with exhibits related to the history of the Indonesian press. Since its designation as National Press Day in 1985, the holiday has been celebrated annually as a working holiday, highlighting the contributions of approximately 100,000 journalists across various media outlets in Indonesia.
