February 11: Lateran Treaty Day (Vatican City)

Lateran Treaty Day is observed in Vatican City every February 11. This holiday commemorates the signing of the Lateran Treaty in 1929, which established Vatican City as a sovereign state and resolved the long-standing "Roman Question" that arose following the unification of Italy. The treaty was signed by Prime Minister Benito Mussolini and Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Gasparri on behalf of Pope Pius XI at the Lateran Palace. The Lateran Pacts consist of a treaty of conciliation, a financial convention, and a concordat that regulates the relationship between the Italian state and the Catholic Church. Lateran Treaty Day is one of the few public holidays in Vatican City that is not a religious feast, alongside the anniversary of the election of Pope Francis on March 13.
