February 12: Red Hand Day

Red Hand Day is observed worldwide every February 12 to draw attention to the plight of child soldiers, who are used in armed conflicts across various countries. Established in 2002 following the adoption of the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict, this observance highlights the estimated 250,000 children currently involved as soldiers. These children are often deployed in armed rebel groups in 17 countries, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and Colombia. Despite the protocol being signed by over 100 countries, the rehabilitation of child soldiers remains inadequate. Red Hand Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing issue of child exploitation in warfare and the need for continued advocacy for their rights.
