February 13: Trndez (Armenia)

Trndez is an Armenian feast of purification observed every February 13, the eve of Candlemas Day. This festival, which has pagan origins, celebrates the arrival of spring and fertility, merging with the Christian feast of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple. Traditionally, bonfires were lit, and couples would jump over the fire to strengthen their love, while childless women hoped to conceive. Although bonfires are less common today, many Armenians participate in evening church services where they light candles to bring home. Sometimes, bonfires are still lit in church courtyards using these candles. The ceremony of blessing newlyweds often follows the liturgy, continuing the festival's connection to love and fertility.
