The Feast of Saint Tryphon is observed in Bulgaria and Montenegro every February 14. This celebration is particularly significant for wine growers, as Saint Tryphon is recognized as the Eastern Orthodox patron saint of wine. He is believed to have been born in Phrygia and was tortured for his faith during the Decian persecution. The day marks the beginning of the grape vine pruning season, which is why Bulgarians refer to him as Zarezan, meaning "the Trimmer." On this day, special services are held in Orthodox churches, and in vineyard districts, wine growers sprinkle wine on their vineyards to seek blessings from Saint Tryphon. Additionally, it is customary to perform the ritual trimming of the vines, followed by evening festivities that include feasting, drinking, singing, and dancing.
