Generalissimo Day is observed in North Korea every February 14, honoring the late leader Kim Jong-il, who was posthumously awarded the title Taewŏnsu, the highest military rank in the country. This holiday was established in 2014 and commemorates Kim Jong-il's legacy, as he became the Supreme Leader in 1994 following his father's death. The title Taewŏnsu was created in 1992 to honor Kim Il-sung on his 80th birthday and was bestowed upon Kim Jong-il in February 2012, on what would have been his 71st birthday. The day is marked by various celebrations, including the broadcasting of songs such as "No Motherland Without You," which glorifies Kim Jong-il. Additionally, February 16 is celebrated as Kim Jong-il's birthday, known as the Day of Shining Star, further emphasizing his significance in North Korean culture.
