February 15: Candlemas

Candlemas, also known as the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple, is observed worldwide by the Eastern Orthodox Church every February 15. This feast commemorates the significant event when Mary and Joseph brought their baby Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem. It is recognized as one of the Twelve Great Feasts and uniquely combines elements of both a Great Feast of the Lord and a Great Feast of the Mother of God. The celebration includes an all-night vigil on the eve of the feast, followed by the blessing of beeswax candles the next morning. During the ceremony, the priest reads four prayers, and during the fifth prayer, attendees bow their heads before God. The priest then blesses the candles with holy water, and the Divine Liturgy commences as the candles are distributed among the congregation. Additionally, the Eastern Orthodox Church practices the Churching of Women, a tradition that blesses mothers who have recovered from childbirth, which has largely faded in Western Christianity.
