This day celebrates gumdrops, chewy sugar-coated gelatin candies that have a history dating back to at least the 19th century. While the exact origin is unclear, some attribute their invention to Percy Trusdale in 1801, with the earliest American reference appearing in an 1859 advertisement. Originally flavored with spices and colored accordingly, such as orange for cloves and red for cinnamon, modern gumdrops now include popular fruit flavors like grape and cherry.
