Family Day originated in Alberta in 1990, aimed at emphasizing family values and encouraging time spent with family. Saskatchewan celebrated Family Day for the first time in 2007, followed by Ontario in 2008, and New Brunswick in 2018. British Columbia adopted the holiday in 2019, moving it from the second Monday of February to align with other provinces. Nova Scotia's Heritage Day, first observed in 2015, honors significant historical figures, starting with Viola Desmond. Prince Edward Island's Islander Day was introduced in 2009, and Manitoba's Louis Riel Day, first celebrated in 2008, honors the Métis leader Louis Riel. While not a federal holiday, many businesses close, and approximately one-third of Canadians do not observe a February statutory holiday.
