War Correspondent Day, also known as War Correspondents Remembrance Day, is observed in Ukraine every February 16. Established in 2018, this day honors the memory of Ukrainian war correspondents who have died in the line of duty, particularly during the Russo-Ukrainian War that began in 2014. The observance is rooted in the tragic death of Captain 3rd rank Dmytro Labutkin, who was killed while documenting the conflict near Debaltseve. War correspondents play a crucial role in providing firsthand accounts from conflict zones, despite the significant risks they face. This day serves as a professional holiday for war correspondents, press officers, and public relations officers, as well as a remembrance for the at least 43 journalists who died during the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine from February to November 2022.
