February 20: Battle of Salta Day (Argentina)

Battle of Salta Day is observed in Argentina on February 20. This day commemorates the Battle of Salta, a significant event during the Argentine War of Independence that took place on the plains of Castañares, north of present-day Salta. The battle resulted in a decisive victory for the troops of the United Provinces of South America against the royalist army led by General Pío de Tristán, who surrendered unconditionally. Although not celebrated as a public holiday each year, the day is recognized as an important anniversary that marks the strengthening of Argentine patriotic forces and their control over much of the northern territories of the Río de la Plata Basin. The battle was notable as the second victory for the Army of the North, following the earlier success at the Battle of Tucumán in September 1812.
