February 22: Takeshima Day (Japan)

Takeshima Day is observed in the Japanese prefecture of Shimane every February 22. This day commemorates Japan's claim of sovereignty over the Liancourt Rocks, known as Takeshima in Japan and Dokdo in South Korea, which occurred in 1905. The islets, consisting of two main islets and about 90 surrounding rocks, are currently controlled by South Korea, which has maintained a presence there since the 1950s. The establishment of Takeshima Day in 2005 marked the 100th anniversary of this claim, leading to protests from South Korea and the cancellation of several joint cultural projects. The territorial dispute remains unresolved, with both countries asserting their claims based on historical records and treaties. While Japan considers Takeshima part of Shimane Prefecture, South Korea regards Dokdo as part of North Gyeongsang Province.
