The day coincides with the Olympics every four years, making it an ideal time for curling watch parties or trying the sport at local clubs, which often offer open demonstrations for beginners. The sport has its origins in Scotland, with the first curling club established in Kilsyth in 1716. The Royal Caledonian Curling Club, founded in Edinburgh in 1838, developed the first official rules for curling.
