Flag Day in Mexico is observed nationwide every February 24, commemorating the establishment of the Mexican flag and its historical significance. The holiday was instituted by President General Lázaro Cárdenas in 1937, marking the anniversary of the Plan of Iguala, proclaimed by Agustin de Iturbide and General Vicente Guerrero in 1821. This plan emphasized the principles of religion, independence, and unity, which are represented by the colors of the modern Mexican flag: green, white, and red. The first flag, known as the Pendon Trigarante, featured these colors arranged diagonally with an eight-point gold star in the center. During Flag Day celebrations, the Mexican flag is typically saluted using the Bellamy salute, where the arm is held across the chest with the palm parallel to the ground before raising it.
