Cooperatives Day, known as Wan Sahakon, is observed in Thailand every February 26 to commemorate the establishment of the country's first agricultural cooperative in 1915. This day was officially recognized in 1967 at the request of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. The first cooperative aimed to alleviate the financial struggles of small farmers, who faced significant debts due to economic transitions and natural disasters. Over the years, the cooperative movement has expanded to include various types of cooperatives, such as thrift and credit cooperatives and consumer cooperatives. The Cooperative Promotion Department, founded in 1972, plays a crucial role in promoting and developing these cooperatives. Celebrations may include activities that highlight the contributions of cooperatives to rural development and the welfare of farmers.
