International Children's Day of Broadcasting (ICDB) is observed worldwide on every first Sunday of March. Established by UNICEF in 1991, this day aims to encourage broadcasters to focus on quality programming for children and to involve them in the programming process. Initially celebrated on the first Sunday in May until 2008, the date was changed to March in 2009. Thousands of broadcasters participate in this holiday, seeking unique and special ways to celebrate that resonate with children. Additionally, UNICEF and the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences created the ICDB Award in 1994, which honors broadcasting companies for programs that reflect the annual theme of the day. UNICEF also presents its own award to recognize outstanding contributions from television and radio broadcasters.
