March 2: Casimir Pulaski Day

Casimir Pulaski Day is celebrated annually on the first Monday of March, which falls on March 2 this year. It honors the birthday of Casimir Pulaski, a Polish soldier and Revolutionary War cavalry officer who played a significant role in the American military during the American Revolution. Although not a national holiday, it is observed with great enthusiasm in Illinois, where schools include it in their curriculum to educate students about Pulaski's contributions. The day was officially recognized in 1986, thanks to the efforts of Mayor Harold Washington. Casimir Pulaski is also honored as an honorary American citizen, a title bestowed by President Barack Obama. The holiday serves as a tribute to Pulaski's dedication and sacrifice, as he fought for a country he had only lived in for a few years before his death in 1779 from wounds sustained at the Siege of Savannah.
