March 3: Suriname Phagwah

Suriname Phagwa is a Hindu spring festival celebrated in Suriname, occurring on the last full moon day of the Hindu lunisolar calendar month, typically in early March. This year, it is observed on March 3. Known as the festival of colors, it symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and involves various customs that engage both Hindus and non-Hindus. Participants are traditionally bespattered with a red liquid dye called ‘abeer,’ which represents the blood of the evil king Kiranya, who was punished for his crimes. People also plant and later burn a castor oil plant as part of the festivities. During the celebrations, Hindus gather at temples or family homes to sing folk songs known as “Chowtal,” performed in alternating rows amid drum beats. The day is also recognized as a public holiday in some Caribbean nations, including Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago.
