Charity Day is observed in Iran every March 5, commemorating the establishment of the Imam Khomeini Relief Foundation (IKRF). This day marks the anniversary of the foundation, which was officially established on March 5, 1979, to assist poor families and individuals in regaining financial stability. The origins of charitable organizations in modern Iran date back to 1964, when participants of the Iranian Revolution began supporting families of political prisoners. IKRF provides various forms of support, including social security for nomads and seniors without insurance, free insurance for those below the poverty line, and financial assistance for students. As of December 2008, approximately 8.6 million people have benefited from IKRF's aid. The foundation also extends its support to predominantly Muslim countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq, and Lebanon, among others.
