March 6: Foundation Day (Norfolk Island)

Foundation Day is observed in Norfolk Island every March 6, commemorating the arrival of the first settlers on the island in 1788. Norfolk Island, a self-governing territory within the Commonwealth of Australia, was first visited by Captain James Cook in 1774, who named it after Mary Howard, Duchess of Norfolk. The island was colonized for defense and foraging purposes by Captain Arthur Phillip, and on this date, Lieutenant Philip Gidley King brought 7 free men and 15 convicts to establish a penal settlement. Although the original penal colony ceased to exist, the island was later settled by people from the Pitcairn Islands. The citizens of Norfolk Island celebrate Foundation Day to honor this significant historical event, even though none of the current islanders are descendants of the initial settlers.
