Significant advancements in geodesy and cartography occurred during the reigns of Nicholas I and Alexander II, and the United Geodetic Survey was founded in 1919, later becoming the Federal Service for Geodesy and Cartography of Russia in 1992. The holiday is celebrated in March due to the historical importance of this month in the field.
