Decoration Day, also known as Memorial Day, is observed in Liberia every third Wednesday of March. This public holiday serves as a memorial day for Liberians to honor their deceased relatives by cleaning and decorating their graves with flowers and wreaths. The holiday has its origins in the United States, where it was established by General John A. Logan after the American Civil War to commemorate fallen soldiers. American settlers who founded Liberia in the 1820s brought this tradition, and it was later adapted to honor all ancestors and heroes who contributed to the country's prosperity. On Decoration Day, national flags are flown at half-mast to symbolize mourning, and it is recognized as an official non-working day in Liberia.
