National Sloppy Joe Day is observed in the United States every year on March 18. This food holiday celebrates the sloppy joe, a popular sandwich made with ground beef, onion, ketchup or sweetened tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and various seasonings, typically served on a hamburger bun. The origins of the sandwich are somewhat unclear, but one theory suggests it was created in Havana, Cuba, in 1917 by José “Sloppy Joe” Abeal y Otero. The sandwich was later brought to the U.S. by Mr. Sweeney, a mayor from New Jersey, who requested a local deli to replicate the recipe. While Town Hall Deli in South Orange, New Jersey, claims to be the birthplace of the sloppy joe, other establishments, like Ye Olde Tavern Inn in Iowa, also assert similar claims. On this day, people are encouraged to enjoy sloppy joes at diners or make them at home, often sharing their creations on social media with specific hashtags.
