March 20: Vernal Equinox Day (Japan)

Vernal Equinox Day, known as Shunbun no Hi, is observed in Japan every year on March 20. This public holiday has its origins in the Shinto kōreisai, which were days of worship established in 1878 to honor past emperors and members of the imperial family. Following World War II, the Japanese government transformed these observances into secular holidays to separate religion from the state. Vernal Equinox Day is part of the seven-day spring festival called Haru no Higan, which has Buddhist roots and encourages spiritual reflection. Traditionally, it is a time for people to visit the graves of their ancestors, clean the sites, and leave offerings. Many Japanese also use this day to clean their homes and make life changes, viewing it as a period of renewal.
