Oltenia Day (Ziua Olteniei) is observed in Romania every March 21 to commemorate the entry of Tudor Vladimirescu’s rebel forces into Bucharest during the Wallachian uprising of 1821. This holiday was formally established in 2017, recognizing Oltenia's historical significance as a region that became the epicenter of a rebellion against the Phanariote administration and the boyar class. Events are organized by central and local authorities in Romania, as well as Romanian cultural institutions abroad, featuring cultural, artistic, and scientific programs, along with special television and radio shows. The uprising, led by Vladimirescu and his Pandurs, marked an early example of Romanian nationalism, despite its eventual military defeat. The first celebration took place in 2018, following the holiday's approval by the Romanian Senate and Chamber of Deputies. Oltenia Day serves to honor the history and culture of the region, reflecting its importance in Romania's national awakening.
