Martyrdom Day of Sardar Bhagat Singh is observed in the Indian state of Haryana every March 23 to honor the memory of the Indian socialist revolutionary, who played a significant role in the Indian independence movement. Bhagat Singh, executed at the age of 23, is remembered for his radical approach to fighting British colonial rule, contrasting with the non-violent resistance advocated by Mahatma Gandhi. Born in 1907 to a politically active Sikh family, Singh became disillusioned with non-violence after witnessing the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. He joined the Youth Revolutionary Movement in 1923 and founded the Naujawan Bharat Sabha to mobilize young workers and peasants. His actions, including the assassination of a police officer in retaliation for the death of freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai and a protest in the Central Legislative Assembly, led to his arrest and eventual execution in 1931. Despite criticism of his violent methods, many Indians regard him as a national hero and martyr, making this day a significant remembrance occasion in Haryana.
