March 25: Crane Day (Sweden)

Crane Day (Trandagen) is a traditional holiday celebrated in parts of Sweden on March 25, marking the return of cranes from their wintering grounds and symbolizing the end of winter and the beginning of spring. This holiday is primarily observed in southeastern Sweden, particularly in the historical provinces of Småland, Öland, and Blekinge, with some traditions also found in Västmanland, Värmland, Dalsland, and parts of Denmark. The day is associated with the saying “The crane carries light in bed,” reflecting the longer daylight hours following the cranes' return. Customs vary by region; children often draw cranes and display these drawings in their windows, leaving knee-high socks on their headboards for cranes to fill with treats like sweets, chocolate, and small toys. Crane Day coincides with the Feast of Annunciation and Waffle Day, allowing children to enjoy both treats from the cranes and heart-shaped waffles. While Crane Day has historical roots dating back to the mid-16th century, it remains primarily a children's holiday today.
