March 30: Spiritual Baptist/Shouter Liberation Day (Trinidad and Tobago)

Spiritual Baptist/Shouter Liberation Day is observed in Trinidad and Tobago every March 30. This public holiday celebrates the Spiritual Baptist faith, also known as Shouter Baptist, which is a syncretic African diasporic religion that combines Christianity with traditional African religious elements. The origins of this holiday date back to the repeal of the Shouter Prohibition Ordinance on March 30, 1951, which had banned the practices of Spiritual Baptists since 1917, thus allowing them to freely practice their religion. In 1996, the government declared this anniversary a public holiday, making Trinidad and Tobago the only country with such a recognition for the Spiritual Baptist faith. Although only 5.7% of the population identifies as Spiritual Baptists, the day is marked by celebrations that include shouting and clapping, typical of their worship practices.
