St. Stupid Day is celebrated annually on April 1 in San Francisco, California. This quirky holiday encourages participants to embrace silliness by wearing unusual costumes and behaving foolishly. Central to the festivities is the Fool’s Day Parade, which features drummers and horn players, and allows attendees to shout silly slogans without fear of condemnation. Activities during the parade include tossing coins at the Banker’s Heart sculpture and playing a game of losing lottery tickets at the Federal Reserve headquarters. Participants also engage in a “leap of faith,” where they jump with their eyes closed, trusting that the ground will be there when they land. Originally started by Ed Holmes in 1979, St. Stupid Day has grown from a small gathering to thousands of attendees celebrating the spirit of foolishness.
