April 7: Green Shirt Day

Green Shirt Day is observed in Canada every April 7 to honor the victims of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash and support organ donor awareness and registration. The day was established following the tragic accident on April 6, 2018, when a bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos junior ice hockey team collided with a semi-trailer truck, resulting in the deaths of sixteen individuals. One of the victims, Logan Boulet, had expressed his wish to be an organ donor, and after his death, his parents donated his organs, saving six lives. This act inspired a significant increase in organ donor registrations across Canada, known as the “Logan Boulet Effect.” Although nearly 90% of Canadians support organ donation, only 32% are registered donors, highlighting the importance of ongoing discussions about the topic. On Green Shirt Day, individuals are encouraged to wear green, organize registration drives, and promote the campaign on social media using hashtags like #GreenShirtDay and #LoganBouletEffect.
