International Day of the Roma is observed worldwide on April 8. This holiday was established in 1990 to commemorate the first World Romani Congress, which took place from April 7 to 12, 1971, in Orpington, near London, and was attended by 23 representatives from nine nations. During the congress, significant decisions were made, including the adoption of the green and blue flag with a red six-spoked chakra as the national emblem of the Roma people, the recognition of the song “Gelem, Gelem” as the anthem, and the preference for the term “Roma” over “Gypsy.” On this day, various concerts and festivals celebrating Romani culture are held, attracting not only Roma but also those who admire their unique heritage.
