PPA Awareness Day, observed worldwide every April 10, aims to increase understanding of Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA), a degenerative brain disorder affecting language capabilities. The day was initiated by individuals affected by PPA and speech and language therapists Rosemary Townsend and Dr. Ann Volkmer, with the inaugural event held on April 4, 2024. Activities focus on educating the public about PPA, its impact on communication, and the benefits of speech and language therapy for individuals with the condition. Additionally, the day provides resources and support for family members of those affected, helping them understand the disease and improve communication with their loved ones. PPA is characterized by a gradual decline in language abilities due to brain degeneration, and it is distinct from aphasia caused by trauma or stroke, as it is incurable and progressively worsens.
