Initially dedicated to the fallen soldiers of Israel, its commemoration has expanded to include victims of terrorism since 2000. The day was first observed in 1953 and became Israel's official Memorial Day in 1963. Public commemorations include national memorial services, private remembrance gatherings at cemeteries, and two-minute sirens marking moments of silence. The official opening ceremony occurs at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, where the Israeli flag is flown at half-mast. Yom Hazikaron concludes with a ceremony at Israel's national cemetery on Mount Herzl, where the flag is returned to full staff, marking the transition to Independence Day celebrations.
